June 4th Incident
On June 4, many gathered at the Victoria Park despite adverse weather to commemorate the victims of the Tiananmen Square crackdown, when the Chinese military brutally suppressed demonstrations by pro-democracy student protestors 24 years ago. The rainstorm forced organisers to end Tuesday's rally after 50 minutes, the first time it has been cut short.
The large crowd hoped that the Chinese government would reverse its verdict on the protests, doing justice to both the victims and their family members. However, China's Communist Party has neither apologised for the crackdown nor provided a formal account of how many died after troops began firing at demonstrators.
“We can show to the Chinese leaders that even after 24 year after the massacre, in Hong Kong we will not forget what they have done. We will continue to demand for justice. We demand for changes in China," said Lee Cheuk-yan, a pro-democracy legislator and organiser of the commemoration of the June Fourth Incident. Event organisers claimed 150,000 attended the annual event, while local police put the number at 54,000.
In addition to the vigil, members of the Hong Kong Federation of Students participated in a 64-hour hunger strike staged in Causeway Bay to pay respect to the victims.
