MTR faces increasing number of delays

Travellers on the MTR’s East Rail Line from Lo Wu to Hung Hum faced severe delays, marking the second day of problems that are plaguing the MTR system in the city. On April 28th, the MTR service stopped once again for around seven minutes from 7:40 a.m. due to signal problems, according to an MTR spokesperson. The company did not inform the media and commuters were not alerted until almost an hour later.

Angry passengers, who were not notified of the issue, crowded into Fan Ling station forcing it to close down due to overcrowding. The station re-opened at around 8am, the busiest time for the MTR as people commute to work in the morning. The same rail line stopped service for around 36 minutes yesterday after the train tracking system at the central control center stopped working.

Six trains were stopped between different stations for as much as 20 minutes during the disruption this week. Terry Wong Wing Kin, MTR infrastructure general manager, issued an apology on a radio show for the recent disruptions and delays. He said “the company had been investigating” and it was not clear whether the problems today were related with the postponed services and halt yesterday.
